Chapter 7

System: Virgil’s star (VGL 191)

Location: Aboard the Alcmene naval vessel Nemean

The Nemean had suffered heavily under the Structure’s swarm attack, and while the damage to the hyperlight pods and sub-light drives had been mostly repaired, the systems were still fragile and needed full retrofits. Collins’ sabotage had destabilized navigational control and mostly undid the crew’s repairs, causing both the light and sub-light drives to fail. With material to repair the ship running low, Lieutenant Harris parked the Nemean in a long, slow orbit around the system’s primary until navigational control could be reliably repaired again.

The captain considered using the remaining attitude thrusters to keep station with the Structure, but decided against it, happy to let his ship drift as far away from it as possible.

Engineering believed they could repair one of the hyperlight pods, but it would take another week, while fixing the drives would take sixteen additional hours of concerted efforts. Most of the ship’s duty sections had at least a few personnel that had been injured during the battle, but thankfully none critically so.

Given the damage that the senior ISAT agent aboard the Nemean had been responsible for, the captain decided it was time to forcefully extract as much assistance from Collins as possible.

“Commander, you have the bridge. I’m going to have another chat with Collins.”

“Aye sir. I think I know what you have in mind.”

The captain grinned. “Nothing that would violate any wartime regulations.”
